When do you prefer using a partial knee surgery?

WHEN THERE IS UNICOMPARTMENTAL ARTHRITIS OF KNEE IN YOUNG PATIENTS UNDER FIFTY YEARS AND WE DO NOT WANT TO SACRIFICE THE CRUCIATE LIGMENTS IN THESE PATIENTS.

What device do you prefer for partial knee surgery and why?

“PRESERVATION”  DEPUY,JOHNSON & JOHNSON.

Dr. PAI HAS BEEN TRAINED IN IT AND I AM COMFORTABLE IN IT.

What device do you prefer for total knee replacement and why?

P.F.C SIGMA C.S. /R.P/R.P.F.  

ONE OF THE PREFERRED DESIGNS,  GOOD LONG FOLLOW-UP,  FROM REPUTED COMPANY.

What approach do you use for both surgeries and why?

STANDARD ANTERIOR MIDLINE INCISION, MEDIAL PARAPATELLAR APPROACH.

How long do you feel it takes for the bone to be fully healed, grow into the prosthesis? What is the recommended time you tell your patients before they can start to walk, run or be completely active?

IN INDIA ONLY CEMENTED PROSTHESIS ARE AVAILABLE AND USED.

PATIENT CAN START IMMEDIATE WEIGHT BEARING WALKING. AT THE END OF 3 WEEKS ALL ACTIVITIES ARE ALLOWED.

Do you use cement or cementless procedures and why?

CEMENTED ONLY.     CEMENTLESS NOT AVIALABLE IN INDIA

Does age determine your use of partial knee replacement or do you go by case?

AGE IS ONE OF THE IMPORTANT FACTORS BUT DECIDING FACTOR IS THE SEVERETY OF ARTHRITIS .

What size incision do your normally use for partial knee? For total knee replacement?

T.K.R – 10 CMS.        UNICOMPARTMENTAL KNEE-7 CMS

What is your typical recovery time? Your typical rehab protocol? Use of crutches for how long ? Typical restrictions and for how long?

RECOVERY TIME – 3 WEEKS.

REHAB PROTOCOL- 2ND DAY WALKING WITH AID,KNEE BENDING EXERCISES. SUTURE REMOVAL AT 2 WEEKS.WALKING WITHOUT AID AT 3 WEEKS.

RESTRICTION ON SITTING ON FLOOR  FOR LIFE TIME.

What type of anesthesia do you use?

COMMONLY EPIDURAL ANAESTHESIA, SOMETIMES GENERAL ANAESTHESIA OR SPINAL ANAESTHESIA.

Where and when did you train for partial knee replacement? For total knee replacement?

Trained in Total Knee Replacement in New York for six months under the guidance of Dr. Steve Harvin.

Trained in Hip and Knee Surgery at Napean Centre, Sydney Australia under the guidance of Prof. Chung.

Do you use a CPM (Continuous Passive Motion) machine after your knee replacement?

ALWAYS.
