Freehold, NJ, January 24, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Late in 2007, Dr Michael Greller and
Dr Alan Nasar, orthopedic surgeons from the Advanced Orthopedics and Sports
Medicine Institute in Freehold, New Jersey, performed a fully cementless,
minimally invasive total knee replacement using trabecular metal technology. It
was a first in the history of CentraState Medical Center, Freehold, New
Jersey.
On Tuesday, November 20th, Drs Greller and Nasar operated at the CentraState
Medical Center in a procedure that did not have to allow the waiting time for
cement to set and harden. The cartilage in the patients knee had been eroded
after osteoarthritis, trauma and job related wear and tear attributed to the
damage. Joint pain, swelling, stiffness and loss of mobility are symptoms
experienced by about 450,000 Americans who seek surgical treatment each year.
Trabecular metal is an innovative material made with tantalum in an
interconnecting, 3-dimensional lattice structure which is 80% porous. It very
closely approximates the micro structural architecture and mechanical properties
of bone. This makes it an ideal material for orthopedic implants. When used in
joint replacements, human bone grows right into and through the trabecular metal
in a rapid fashion creating a very strong bond. explains Dr Nasar This allows
orthopedic surgeons to implant artificial joints without the use of bone cement,
a significant advance as bone cement can weaken and crack over time and generate
debris. By eliminating bone cement from the implant, we can perform a simpler
procedure that can last longer than cemented implantation. This technology has
the most potential benefit for young, active patients in need of knee
replacement surgery.
Drs. Greller and Nasar have been on the cutting edge of orthopedic technology in
joint replacement surgery. Recent innovations such as the Gender Knee
replacement, computer assisted surgery, and minimally invasive joint replacement
have been adopted by the orthopedic surgeons at the Advanced Orthopedics and
Sports Medicine Institute (AOSMI) in Freehold, New Jersey, to provide patients
with an individualized, technologically advanced approach to joint replacement.
